Low-profile switches, explained

"Low profile" is a height class, not a switch type. Everything you know about linear/tactile/clicky still applies — what changes is the physical envelope, and with it the sockets, keycaps and cases it can live in.

The two low-profile ecosystems

The #1 LP buying mistake: buying "low-profile keycaps" for a Choc board. Choc stems are physically smaller than LP-MX stems — the two LP worlds do not share caps. The checker separates these when you pick a Choc switch.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify your board's mount: Choc or LP-MX family. When in doubt, the board's own spare-switch listing tells you.
  2. Buy caps for that mount — "low-profile" on a Choc set listing means Choc caps.
  3. Check layout coverage: LP cap sets come in fewer layouts; compact boards may need extra kits.
  4. For LP HE boards, apply the same socket + polarity checks as full-height HE (HE guide).
